John Patrick Donnellon of Charlton Australia was born in 1905 in Charlton, Buloke Shire County, VIC to Bridget Margaret (Byrne) Donnellon and Michael Donnellon. He had siblings Mary Kathleen Donnellan, Honora Ann (Donnellan) Hogan, Francis Donnellon, and Michael Joseph Donnellon. John Donnellon married Julia Josephine (Keane) Donnellon in 1938, and died at age 82 years old on June 29, 1988.

In 1905, in the year that John Patrick Donnellon was born, the Niagara Falls conference was held in Fort Erie, Ontario. Led by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter, a group of African-American men met in opposition to racial segregation and disenfranchisement. Booker T. Washington had been calling for policies of accommodation and conciliation and these two men, along with the others who attended the conference, felt that this was accomplishing nothing. The group was the precursor to the NAACP.

In 1922, when he was 17 years old, on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.
