Pat Gross, a friend
Pat Gross was in the Navy when I first met him. He had completed Basic training and Hospital Corps School in San Diego, CA
He was transferred to the Naval Hospital (Oak Knoll) at Oakland, CA to wait for the Neuropsychiatric Technician class to start. We were in the same class and at its conclusion we were both selected to stay at Oak Knoll. He served as an NP Tech throughout his enlistment.
When he was discharged in early 1966 he was soon married to Darlene Degenerous(sp). I was from the Minneapolis MN area and he and Darlene decided to leave the Bay Area of northern California and join me in Minnesota.
We worked together at a couple of jobs including painting houses and machine operator in a plastics molding plant. We had applied for admission to St. Thomas College in St. Paul and were accepted and started in September. Pat and Darlene stayed in the area for about a year and then decided to move back to California. She had begun working for Northwestern Bell in Minneapolis and was able to transfer to Pacific Bell. I saw him two or three times over the years but only when I was in California on short business trips. We were good friends and we spent a lot of time traveling around the Bay Area doing what young unattached sailors did. I have missed him and think of him and Darlene often.
