John Peter Zartman was born on November 30, 1778 in Northumberland, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania United States to Johann Henry Zartman and Elizabeth (Hauser) Zartman, and had siblings Michael Zartman, John Henry Zartman, John Jacob Zartman, Samuel Zartman, and Alexander Zartman IV. He married Elizabeth (Bowman) Zartman, and had children Peter Barker Zartman, Henry Zartman, Solomon Bowman Zartman, David Zartman, Catherine (Zartman) Stambaugh, and Susan B. (Zartman) Stambaugh. John Zartman died at age 113 years old on November 20, 1892 in York County.

In 1810, he was 32 years old when on November 17th, the Anglo-Swedish War (1810–12) began. Sweden declared war on the United Kingdom. While no hostilities occurred, France had demanded that Sweden declare the war and for economic reasons, Sweden complied. Two years later, France occupied Swedish Territory and Sweden sought peace with Great Britain.

In 1827, when he was 49 years old, Englishman John Walker invented the first friction match, which he named Lucifer. The match consisted of a wooden stick coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum. A box of 50 matches was one shilling and came with folded sandpaper to use to strike a match.
