John Playle was born in 1832 in Writtle, Essex County, England United Kingdom. He was in a relationship with Euphemia Rose (Birrell) Playle, and had children John Phillip Playle, Phemia (Playle) Cox, George James Playle, Honor Isabel (Playle) Colman, Esther Elizabeth (Playle) Moorman, Margaret Rose Playle, Alice Agnes Playle, and Ellen Rose Playle. John Playle died at age 83 years old on September 20, 1916 in Doncaster East, Manningham City County, Victoria Australia, and was buried at Heidelberg Warringal Cemetery 472 Upper Heidelberg Rd, in Heidelberg, Banyule City County, VIC.

    The Ballarat Star, Victoria. 3rd May 1910. NEWS IN BRIEF. Mr. and Mrs. Playle, of Kyneton, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Wednesday. Their marriage took place at Beaufort in 1860. Both Mr. and Mrs. Playle arrived in Victoria in the early fifties. Mr. Playle emigrated to Adelaide and came on to Melbourne shortly afterwards, and Mrs. Playle ( then Miss Birrell ), was a passenger to Portland by the ship Eutopia from Liverpool. ( The Utopia left Liverpool on 3rd November 1853 with 389 immigrants and took 83 days to reach Australia )

    The Argus. 22nd September 1916. PLAYLE. - On the 20th September, at "Ewsons," Blackburn road, East Doncaster, John, dearly beloved husband of Euphemia Playle, much loved father father of John, George, Mrs. J. Cox, Mrs. Geo. Colman, Mrs. F. Moorman, Alice, and Nellie. Aged 82 years. Colonist of 62 years.

In 1832, in the year that John Playle was born, by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.

In 1856, John was 24 years old when on January 26th the Battle of Seattle occurred. Marines from the ship the USS Decatur, stationed in Elliott Bay, along with about 50 Seattle settlers, fought Native Americans in the area. Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens had declared a "war of extermination" on Native communities 5 days before.
