  • Introduction

    Father was Jack Tyrus Tidwell, MD. Mother Lena died in flu epidemic of 1918 when he was 3. Raised by his dad who never remarried in Columbus, GA. Attended military school at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville. Married Marguerite Denney in 1941. Joined the Army. Served on Saipan in WWII. Had son, Thomas Jackson Tidwell, MD b. May 12 1943 and daughter Patricia Ann Feb 1, 1945. Officer Training School, Ft. Benning. Was stationed in Quincy, Oregon, Seattle, WA, Yokohama Japan twice, climbed Mt. Fuji with son Jack, Washington DC, Ft. Gilliam Atlanta, Served as port commander in Inchon, Korea. Established two orphanages there. Was loved and requested by Koreans to be Ambassador. Worked for the VA in Atlanta after retirement. Finally retired at home on a mountain with a view of Atlanta 75 miles away at Lake Arrowhead, Waleska, GA. After his wife Marguerite died he lived with his son's family in Columbus until he died in 2002. He had a great sense of humor, laughed a lot except when he played golf, had no enemies except the golf ball and clubs. Was a fine soldier, father, and husband. They spent their later year winters in Florida golfing and going from place to place touring and staying in military post guest facilities. Wife beat him a lot... on the golf course.

    Rose Hill Elementary, Columbus, GA; Riverside Academy, Gainesville, GA; received appoint to USMA West Point, but was not home to receive the appointment for being out on the road selling magazines during the depression. Attended many schools in the Army reaching Full Colonel by retirement.

    Military career 31 years. Retd Col. Transportation Corps. Second career in the VA afterwards.

In 1915, in the year that John S Tidwell was born, Audrey Munson, playing a model for a sculptor in the film "Inspiration", became the first actress to shed her clothes on screen. Fearing that banning the film would mean that censors would also have to "ban Renaissance art" the film was released, with Munson in the nude scenes and a stand-in doing the acting. (Munson had previously been "America's First Supermodel" and posed nude as the model for many famous artworks.) The film was a hit with audiences.

In 1923, John was only 8 years old when on November 8th and 9th, Adolf Hitler and his followers (the early Nazi party) staged the "Beer Hall Putsch" in Munich in an attempt to take over Bavaria (a state in Germany). They failed. Hitler was charged with treason and convicted, receiving a sentence of 5 years. He served under 1 year in jail.
