John Thomas Mcdowell Jr. was born on July 20, 1920 in Greenwood, Greenwood County, South Carolina United States to John Thomas McDowell, Sr and Lula DeVore, and had siblings Reba A Mcdowell, Letha Loree McDowell, Vera Lee McDowell, and Frances McDowell. He married Viola DeRosa McDowell, and had children Joy McDowell Wittke and Maydonna McDowell. John Mcdowell died at age 53 years old on July 23, 1973 in Winston-Salem, NC, and was buried at Forsyth Memorial Park 3771 Yadkinville Road, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County.

In 1920, in the year that John Thomas McDowell, Jr. was born, the National Football League, first called the American Professional Football Association, was created. College football was more popular than pro football and rising player salaries were bankrupting league owners. In response, owners created the NFL, using the pro baseball association as a model. Eleven teams were formed: the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians, Dayton Triangles, Decatur Staleys, Hammond Pros, Massillon Tigers, Muncie Flyers, Racine Cardinals, Rochester Jeffersons and Rock Island Independents.

In 1948, at the age of 28 years old, John was alive when on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
