He had siblings Frederick Henry Jansen, Ellena Sophia Jansen, Annie Maria (Jansen) Chappell, Ferdinand Robert Jansen, Francis Patrick Jansen, Charles Jansen, Percy Chappell Jansen, Albert Ernest Jansen, George Coleman Jansen, Catherine Elizabeth (Jansen) Child, and Arthur James Jansen. John Jansen married Alice Selina (Radley) Jansen in 1894, and died at age 85 years old on February 5, 1953.

In 1888, John was 21 years old when on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.
