John Wright Butler was born on August 26, 1927 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania United States. He married Frances Victoria Butler in 1960 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County and they later divorced in 1979 in Bensalem, Bucks County. They had children Virginia Eleanor Leyendecker, Carolyn Joan Conway, and Nancy Ann Thompson. He also married Ida Mae Butler in 1987 in Haddon Township, Camden County, New Jersey, and they were married until John's death on September 27, 2017 in Toms River, Ocean County.

In 1927, in the year that John Wright Butler was born, aviator and media darling Charles Lindbergh, age 25, made the first successful solo TransAtlantic flight. "Lucky Lindy" took off from Long Island in New York and flew to Paris, covering  3,600 statute miles and flying for 33 1⁄2-hours. His plane "The Spirit of St. Louis" was a fabric-covered, single-seat, single-engine "Ryan NYP" high-wing monoplane designed by both Lindbergh and the manufacturer's chief engineer.

In 1932, John was only 5 years old when five years to the day after Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart flew solo from Newfoundland to Ireland, the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo and the first to replicate Lindbergh's feat. She flew over 2,000 miles in just under 15 hours.
