Mr. Kosack was born July 26, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Joseph Edward and Anne (Sheain) Kosack. His father came here from Vienna, Austria, and his mother from a long line of Philadelphians. He married Betty Naomi Diel on November 30, 1946, at First United Methodist Church in Olney after meeting her at a George Field dance, and she remained the love of his life.
He was retired from WVLN radio station in Olney, where he was well known for 26 years as announcer and program director. Joe won many awards over the years and he had a great voice that became familiar in community households. Many remember him opening his daily program by singing, "You're the Cream in my Coffee." No one remained a stranger for long, and once someone sent him a letter simply addressed "Joe," Olney, IL and he actually received it. He was in the U.S. Air Force and was a World War II veteran. He was a graduate of Vincennes University and also attended Millikin University. He belonged to the Olney Lions Club and the Boy Scouts, where he served as Scoutmaster in the only troop in the country for handicapped scouts. He loved music and singing and enjoyed singing solo songs at his church for many occasions. When there was a city production to be put on, he was always one of the first to volunteer.
Mr. Kosack is survived by his wife, Betty Kosack, of Olney; sons, Dr. Joseph Richard Kosack and his wife, Victoria, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Cary Kosack, of Olney; daughters, Constance Drewes and her husband, Dr. Michael Drewes, of Champaign, and Kathy Greene and her husband, Terry, of Gilbert, Ariz.; a sister, Anne Johnson, of Wynnewood, Pa.; and two cousins, Louis Sheain, of Jenkinstown, Pa., and Frank Sheain, of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren, Jennifer Barrueta, David Kosack, Christopher, Brett, Beau, Carly and Schuyler Drewes, Cara Jo, Rob and Jesse Kosack, and Tyler, Erika, Lauren and Nick Greene; and seven great-grandchildren.
