    The Daily Post, Hobart. 19th June 1909. Indecent Language. Joseph Moate did not answer to a charge of using indecent language in Argyle street on May 26. Constable Brown said that he had occasion to caution Moate for beating his wife, and when he left the house Moate came to the door and used very bad language. Mr. Wise P. M., found the defendant guilty, and ordered him to be imprisoned for 14 days. The Mercury, Hobart. 17th February 1910. POLICE COURTS. HOBART TWO MONTHS FOR WIFE BEATING. At the City Police Court yesterday, before Mr. Wise, P. M., Joseph Moate, of 132 Argyle- street, pleaded guilty to a charge of having been drunk and disorderly in the Police Court, Hobart. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting his wife, Ann Louise Moate, on Friday, the 11th of February. Ann Louise Moate gave evidence that came home, used abusive language, and then seized her by the hair. Her daughter, aged 16, went to protect her, but Moate kicked her away. Some boys called over the fence, " Don't ill-use your wife," but defendant continued his ill-usage till in response to her daughter's call, Mr. Self came and took him away. Defendant had not been home since the previous Saturday morning, ..... he was sentenced to two months imprisonment..

Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.
