  • Introduction

Well Joseph Podsiad is my grandfather. He died 6 years before I was born but he was married to my grandmother Pearl Podsiad and they had 4 daughters and 1 son. Daughters Nadine, Jean, Nancy & Brenda and son Bill. Brenda is my mother and she died on Dec. 21, 1991. I don’t know really a lot about my grandfather other than stories that I’ve been told. I do know that he served in the military on a ship during WWII and my mom always said that he was a good man. That’s all I can say because I didn’t get to know him. I do have a picture of him with my mom when she was a little girl and a rocking chair that he gave her when she was little but that’s it. Oh yeah he had a nick name “Porky” he always kept the bill of his ball cap flipped up.

Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.

In 1925, at the age of only 14 years old, Joseph was alive when gangster Al "Scarface" Capone took over the Chicago bootlegging racket at age 26. Previously right hand man to boss Johnny Torrio, Capone took over when Torrio was shot and severely injured and decided to resign. The bootlegging and brothel organization was massive and when asked what he did, Capone often replied "I am just a businessman, giving the people what they want".
