Joshua was the subject matter of an episode of "Evil Lives Here", an American documentary tv series on Investigation Discovery (ID) that highlights true crimes and often features interviews with family members, police footage and family photos. His episode "Let Her Rot" was the second episode of Season 5 (2019) which tells the story of how his mother Stephanie convinced Joshua's sister, Guenevere Hudnall, to kill Joshua's father (William Arnold Hudnall) with an axe so that they could receive government benefits. The family needed money as their mobile home was under foreclosure. On June 9th 2011 Stephanie drove with Guenevere to her estranged husband's home in Hawthorne Florida. When William was asleep Guenevere took a pickax and struck her father in both the head and chest until he died. Both Guenevere and Stephanie were caught and found guilty then convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison. During the episode Joshua shared his beliefs that he thought his mother Stephanie convinced his sister to commit the crime. He shared that she was manipulative throughout their childhood. Joshua visited both his mother and sister in jail to find out why they did it, but he was never successful understanding the motive besides needing the money. Joshua died of liver failure and was discovered in his truck shortly after the episode was taped. See Note from producer Tracy Ullman about Joshua's death. As was apparent from the episode, Joshua did a stellar job dealing with his hardships during life. This veteran spoke openly about what happened to him and how he tried to process the events from his rather hard life. His openness acts as inspiration for all of us that struggle with hardship. Thank you for your service Joshua.

Ethnicity & Lineage

Joshua's family life at home was rather difficult as a child. Money was tight and this caused friction between his parents, him, and his sister.

Nationality & Locations

Joshua was born and died in Florida but I'm not sure if he lived in other locations.

The only record I could find that is a possible match is a "Michael Hudnall" who went to Pioneer Ridge Middle School in Independence Missouri, but I'm not certain that's him.

Was Joshua a religious man?

Was Joshua baptized?

Personal Life

Joshua had two sisters and a rather difficult relationship with his mother. He was quoted as saying his mother was manipulative. Friends of the family said similar things including that his mother often interjected unpleasant situations.

Military Service

Army veteran - Joshua publicly stated that he enlisted in the army after his mother Stephanie Hudnall repeatedly attempted to stab him. He said that "Iraq was the easiest time of my life... You got bombs going off everywhere," Joshua shared. "There's always someone trying to kill you, and even with all that craziness, [it was] still a thousand times better than what I grew up with."

Note from producer Tracy Ullman about Joshua's death

The following was posted on Evil Lives Here facebook page on Wednesday January 9th 2019: A note from our producer, Tracy Ullman: As the producer of this show, I contacted Joshua after reading about his experience in a newspaper article and wondering how he felt. When we finally made contact, we hit it off right away. Over months, Joshua unfurled the details of his journey: his tumultuous childhood that led to his service in Iraq, finding out his father had died only to come home from overseas for his funeral and realize his mother and sister had committed murder. How he got through that I'll never know, but he had a strength about him that allowed him to continue dreaming and thinking about the future. He had been driving a truck and wanted to move in with his aunt and uncle in New Orleans and work in forensics. We were talking about me fixing him up with a girlfriend. He had a marvelous sense of humor and a huge heart. I'm devastated to hear he died. He will be much missed and to his good friends and family, he was much loved.

Josh grew up in a horrible situation but he still became an honorable man who proudly and gladly served his country. Josh and his father, two very good souls who contributed much to society, didn’t get to enjoy the rest of their life, but we get to support his heartless and evil mother and sister for the rest of their lives.
GHx L55 commented on Jul 04, 2020
His mother tried to poison his father, so maybe after that botched attempt, she started giving Josh and his father low doses of poison over a long period of time that damaged their liver. Maybe the autopsy of his father mentions the condition of his liver, but it may not have shown damage at that time. As mean as his mother was, I imagine she wanted him to die also so he wouldn’t use any of his fathers money.

You could be right. Or it is possible that he turned to drinking to bury his sorrows. He did mention he had PTSD. A lot of people with that often turn to alcohol unfortunately. God Bless.
Daniel Pinna commented on Feb 05, 2021
I think that's what happened too...alcohol to dull the pain.

I saw the episode on the ID Network. I was really struck by his energy that he gave off. In spite of having such a terrible and traumatic upbringing he was still able to become an honorable young man. He obviously had a strong inner strength but inspite of all his hardships he gave off a softness that I found to be very comforting. I would have loved the opportunity to have met him in person. I admire his strength and thank him for his service. RIP Joshua , fly high and may you finally be at peace now with your Father.

Joshua Michael Hudnall was the best friend a person could have I personally took him on as my partner at CRST as well as at USA truck where we drove together for approximately 4 years during which time even after I was no longer driving he would still stop in at my home in Maryville, Tennessee for every holiday including my daughter birthday each year. "His favorite saying was everyone's place is in the kitchen because that's where the food is!" He loved to eat. And I always made sure to cook when I knew he was coming in. To this day I still leave an empty seat with a plate at our table ready for him in hopes that he will walk through that door again. We all miss him dearly he always brightened up the darkest of days and though he will always be in our hearts there will also always be a seat at our family table for him he was my best friend and I loved him like my own brother. My daughter still asks about him occasionally and it breaks my heart she loved him so much he always had a way with kids. RIP brother we will miss you forever and we hung a flag in your honor from our front porch I got one special made just for you we will always love you and I can't not wait fo the day we meet again on the highway in the sky. Keep on trucking.

I don't know you Joshua, but l pray for you😢l pray that you knew Jesus & if you didn't get a chance to get to know Him, l pray that God will give you that chance at the coming resurrection before the final judgement day. Its so unfair what you went thru on this old earth..things just seem to keep getting worse here, but we all must learn to forgive, & l pray that God gives you that chance if you never had it here on this earth. God rest your soul baby boy as you sleep in peace while we all wait on our Lord's return on His coming day. I pray God blesses you & keeps you, along with your dad, in His loving precious memory, & that you both may get to spend eternity together. In Jesus name..Amen❤

I am devastated... It is 7:32 am November 30th, 2020... I can't sleep SO I have been watching all the different crime shows.. I JUST finished watching "let her rot" and now I am at the very end.... In memory of.... WHAT???? I immediately get online to look up why the hell .. what the hell???? I am absolutely heartbroken...Tears streaming down my face... He went through soo much... He is my son's age.. I also found out he was literally 30mins away from where I live.. Here in Jacksonville Fl.... I would have reached out.. Now I can't.. I dk how many friends he had. or if he just kept to himself.. But this..... this is .. I am actually at a loss for words... A life a beautiful life is gone.. and it shouldn't be.. He should still be here.. May God bless you Josh.. I pray that you are finally with your father again in much much better place..... I am soo sorry for everything you endured while on this earth.. Please God Please take him in your arms and give him the peace and happiness he deserves.

Yeah his mother and sister should be the ones dead in the ground, hateful greedy people. But instead the loving people his dad and him pass away... it’s just not fair and not right. Only the good die young. And Josh is right. I hope his mother literally rots in jail for what she did. Mothers should not treat their children the way she did. What an awful person. God Bless you Josh. You were an awesome beautiful person. I wish you were still with us. It breaks my heart you are gone. God must have needed an angel like you!! 😇♥️♥️♥️

My reaction was the same! After seeing this episode tonight. I was very heart broken to find read he’s passed. So sad, he truly couldn’t shake the demons. I trust and believe that God makes no mistakes, but you can’t help wanting some happiness for Joshua. I did not know him but I feel like his friends have described him accurately. I would loved to have heard that he had a family or wife and was well. A life barely lived and so tragic. I do pray that he’s resting well.

I just did the same thing. The episode just aired again Feb 6th at 12:00 am. I watched the whole episode and at the end "in memory of" so I had to Google what happened to him and how very sad that he passed away at such a young age. The poor guy, how horrible! I too, live in Jacksonville FL, that's why I commented here, being so similar to me watching just tonight. 💖

Awwww Joshua. What a life. He endured so much and just when he was trying to get to a better place, and it sounds like he was, he died. Rest in Heavenly peace sweet young man. Rest easy with your dad.❤️

I just saw Josh's story on ID and was so moved by him I looked him up online. I'm heartbroken to know he's dead. If only I could have known him. We would have been friends. My mother is also evil. It's not easy to find others who feel this way about their mother. Rest in peace with your dad, my unknown, yet kindred, friend. Amy Eldridge

I've watched this particular show 2-3 times and I'm so impressed by how Joshua handled his life after leaving home. He showed so much promise for a good life; how sad that he died so young! R.I.P. Joshua.

May you rest forever in peace Joshua. You remind me so much of my own son, you're alike in so many ways. Your gentle spirit combined with that big, burly physique. I know you get to be with your dad now and that makes me smile. I'm so sorry for everything you had to endure in this life but you're with Jesus now sweet boy. 🌈

The show aired again this evening and I was shocked to see the in memory of... It was terrible that he had been through so much and was finally getting his life back together then passed away. Rest in Heaven now Joshua.

I saw this episode tonight on TV. Joshua's story really touched me emotionally, and, like others, I had to find out why and how he died. All of the findings indicated that he died of liver failure, but honestly, I think that Josh died of a broken heart, and I grieve for him.

I felt a motherly connection to Joshua. I just wanted to give him a big momma bear hug. I did not know he had passed until today. I was watching a marathon of the show. At the end of his episode I had to rewind to make sure I had read it right. My heart broke. I could not believe it. He was so young. Liver failure? Did she feed him poison or was he born with a liver condition or have NASH like me? My poor boy( in my heart I adopted him). So I googled. I read so many comments. I want to thank the family in Tenn. for sharing their story and memories about him. I am happy that he had good times and love after all the tragedy he endured. Now I pray he is in heaven with his daddy living in peace and love.

I just finished watching him and I'm so saddened to hear of his passing. He was the only one with any sense. I felt sorry for him being related to the two insane women (mother & sister). I pray he finds peace..
