Joshua Michael Hudnall's History: 1991 - 2018

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Joshua was the subject matter of an episode of "Evil Lives Here", an American documentary tv series on Investigation Discovery (ID) that highlights true crimes and often features interviews with family members, police footage and family photos. His episode "Let Her Rot" was the second episode of Season 5 (2019) which tells the story of how his mother Stephanie convinced Joshua's sister, Guenevere Hudnall, to kill Joshua's father (William Hudnall) with an axe so that they could receive government benefits. The family needed money as their mobile home was under foreclosure. On June 9th 2011 Stephanie Hudnall drove with Guenevere Hudnall to her estranged husband's home in Hawthorne Florida. When William Hudnall was asleep Guenevere took a pickax and struck her father in both the head and chest until he died. Both Guenevere and Stephanie were caught and found guilty then convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison. During the episode Joshua shared his beliefs that he thought his mother Stephanie Hudnall convinced his sister to commit the crime. He shared that she was manipulative throughout their childhood. Joshua visited both his mother and sister in jail to find out why they did it, but he was never successful understanding the motive besides needing the money. Joshua died of liver failure and was discovered in his truck shortly after the episode was taped. See Note from producer Tracy Ullman about Joshua's death. As was apparent from the episode, Joshua did a stellar job dealing with his hardships during life. This veteran spoke openly about what happened to him and how he tried to process the events from his rather hard life. His openness acts as inspiration for all of us that struggle with hardship. Thank you for your service Joshua.

Joshua served in the 3rd Cavalry Regiment (formerly known as the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment) in the United States Army. He said that "Iraq was the easiest time of my life... You got bombs going off everywhere," Joshua shared. "There's always someone trying to kill you, and even with all that craziness, [it was] still a thousand times better than what I grew up with."

Note from producer Tracy Ullman about Joshua's death
The following was posted on Evil Lives Here facebook page on Wednesday January 9th 2019:

A note from our producer, Tracy Ullman: As the producer of this show, I contacted Joshua after reading about his experience in a newspaper article and wondering how he felt. When we finally made contact, we hit it off right away. Over months, Joshua unfurled the details of his journey: his tumultuous childhood that led to his service in Iraq, finding out his father had died only to come home from overseas for his funeral and realize his mother and sister had committed murder. How he got through that I'll never know, but he had a strength about him that allowed him to continue dreaming and thinking about the future. He had been driving a truck and wanted to move in with his aunt and uncle in New Orleans and work in forensics. We were talking about me fixing him up with a girlfriend. He had a marvelous sense of humor and a huge heart. I'm devastated to hear he died. He will be much missed and to his good friends and family, he was much loved.

Joshua Michael Hudnall was the best friend a person could have I personally took him on as my partner at CRST as well as at USA truck where we drove together for approximately 4 years during which time even after I was no longer driving he would still stop in at my home in Maryville, Tennessee for every holiday including my daughter birthday each year. "His favorite saying was everyone's place is in the kitchen because that's where the food is!" He loved to eat. And I always made sure to cook when I knew he was coming in. To this day I still leave an empty seat with a plate at our table ready for him in hopes that he will walk through that door again. We all miss him dearly he always brightened up the darkest of days and though he will always be in our hearts there will also always be a seat at our family table for him he was my best friend and I loved him like my own brother. My daughter still asks about him occasionally and it breaks my heart she loved him so much he always had a way with kids. RIP brother we will miss you forever and we hung a flag in your honor from our front porch I got one special made just for you we will always love you and I can't not wait fo the day we meet again on the highway in the sky. Keep on trucking.

Such a sweet but sad comment. So glad he had a friend like you to help keep his memory alive. That young man touched my heart and soul after hearing him on Evil Lives Here, his last words on the show made me cry on how he spoke about forgiveness and letting go of resentment towards others and not allowing it any control in his life because it gives power over us. Many victims of crime were taught a great lesson from this young man if he could do this then others also could do this and have.I was a victim and forgave the person many years ago not for them but for myself and by doing this we are free . Joshua was a true soldier not only for a war to protect our country but one in his home where he should have felt love and safe. He won both wars and his victorious. I wanted to hug him so bad and in some way let him know real mothers aren't like his mother was towards him. One day I will give him this hug and now he knows what real love is and his back his father's arms and his heavenly fathers also, never to feel evil again.

I just finished watching him and I'm so saddened to hear of his passing. He was the only one with any sense. I felt sorry for him being related to the two insane women (mother & sister). I pray he finds peace..
