She married Reston Nish Thom on April 17, 1929 at Scotch College Chapel, in Hawthorn, Boroondara City County, Victoria, and they were married until death separated them. Katarian Thom died at age 96 years old on October 8, 1997 in Kew, VIC, and was buried at Warringal Cemetery, 472 Heidelberg Rd, in Heidelberg, Banyule City County.

In 1901, in the year that Katarian McLean ( Gillies) Thom was born, Teddy Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States. TR, as he was known, had been Vice-President for 6 months when President William McKinley was assassinated. At age 42, he became the youngest President to serve although John Kennedy, at age 43, was the youngest President elected. He was a popular progressive and was elected to a second term in 1904 as a Republican, winning 56.4% of the popular vote and 336 electoral votes.

In 1919, at the age of 18 years old, Katarian was alive when the "Black Sox Scandal" rocked baseball fans during the World Series. Eight players on the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series, thus allowing the Cincinnati Reds to win, and making money off of the losses. All of the players were found not guilty by a jury but the fallout lasted for decades. The players were banned from baseball even though they were found innocent.
