The Argus, Melbourne February 1894. FILIAL OBLIGATIONS. At the City Police Court yesterday, before Captain J. D. Garside, J.P., a decrepit old man named Lancaster Clarke was charged with vagrancy. The old adage that it is easier to for one father to keep six sons than for six sons to keep one father was exemplified in the case. Two sons of the accused were examined in the witness box, and declared their inability to contribute towards his support. He had never done anything for them since they were children, and it was to their mother entirely that they were indebted for their upbringing. The Bench committed the accused to gaol for 12 months. The Geelong Advertiser. 28th August 1894. An old man nam ed Lancaster Clarke, who has been bedridden for some time, died yesterday in the local gaol, in which he was serving a sentence for vagrancy. Death was due to old age and debility, and a verdict was entered up to that effect by Mr. P. Smyth, J.P., who conducted the usual enquiry.
