  • Introduction

    He was my dad: Was the fifth of eleven children. Moved to Manhattan, KS in 1948 with family. Graduated Lucky High Catholic High School and attended Kansas State University (Mechanical Engineering). In his earlier years he worked at Kleppers Gas Station as an attendant and also worked as a Car Hop, giving his wages to his parents to help raise his younger siblings. On October 26th, 1963 he married Karen Marceil Hoke (1944-1984) and they had three children: Lawrence Curtis Jr. (1964-2015), James Cody (1967) and Marceil Marion (1970). As of this date (2021) they have four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He built a duplex in Manhattan next door to his parents in 1964, renting out the smaller side for extra income and raised his family in that home until they were grown. He began his married life as a construction worker, building swimming pools and soon incorporated a business (Rogers Construction) with his older brother Nick. Together they bought acreage in Swamp Angel on Hwy 24, east of Manhattan, erecting a warehouse on one of the lots. This was used for storing machinery such as DC-10 bulldozers, roadgraters, etc. Rogers Construction started out bidding various types of commercial construction and remodeling jobs (Holiday Inns and later Dairy Queen's). They built a house from the ground up on thier family's development (Rogers Addition) and sold it. In the summer of 1979, while remodeling a roof of a Dairy Queen off of 1-70 in Abilene, Kansas he was given the opportunity to purchase the business, which he did, moving his family to Abilene in 1980.
