  • Early Life & Education

Leo finished high school in 1937 at Pemberton High School. Throughout his life Leo was an avid reader and curious about science and technology. He was accomplished in handwriting script aand enjoyed doodling. He studied for and passed with flying colors the NJ Real Estate Licensing program.
  • Military Service

Leo Erles served in the US Army from March 1945 until May 1955. In WWII, Leo was in the Pacific Theater of Operations, including the Philippines. He was subsequently affected to the 8th Army Occupation Forces in Japan. After 2 years in the 8th Army GHQ in Tokyo, Leo transferred to 25th Division HQ in Osaka where he met and later married a Japanese national, Taneko Hino Erles. With the outbreak of the Korean War in July 1950, Staff Sergeant Erles, as part of the 25th Division, was dispatched to Korea in the UN's desperate effort to stem the tide of the North Korean invasion of the South. He left behind his wife Taneko who was carrying their first child, a daughter Alice. After debarkation in Pusan, Leo participated in the defense of the Pusan Perimeter through the bone-chilling winter of 1950 and the subsequent breakout of the UN forces in pursuit of the NKPA to the 38th parallel, as well as the reversal and stalemate upon the entry of Chinese forces in the conflict. Leo was promoted to Sergeant First Class during this period. After 18 months he was rotated out of Korea, eventually returning to administrative duties in Yokohama, Japan. When his enlistment was up in 1955, Leo decided to call it quits, taking his wife and two children and returning to civilian life in the US.
  • Personal Life & Family

Leo, along with his brothers, grew up knowing how to track, shoot, hunt and trap. It wasn't a leisure -time activity but backwoods survival. Knowing how to hunt, dress and prepare wildlife was an essential part of getting food on the table. Keeping an eye open for game wardens was also a fact of life when an out-of-season opportunity presented itself. Self-sufficiency and resourcefulness was something every young man was expected to nuture: everything from cobbling shoes, to building farm structures, fixing machinery, knowing how to grow food, to re-building car engines. Nothing was 'junk' - just parts for a future repair or project Leo walked several miles every day to school and, to build himself up for sports, he would sprint or jog and developed a strong physique. In high school, he played football and was an excellent sprinter and middle-distance runner on the track team. His High School team was selected to participate in the 1936 Penn Relays. He remembered watching the famous Jesse Owens running in several events but he was especially proud of the silver medal his relay team brought home in their event.

Leo- Osaka, Japan
Leo- Osaka, Japan
Leo was living the good life in Occupied Japan. The occupation troops were demobilizing to the point that by 1950, only 10% of the troops had been in WWII, and Division strength across the 8th Army was cut by 25%. No ongoing combat training and outdated weapons. The troops were more adept as a constabulary force than a combat team. On June 25th, to the shock of everyone, North Korea, with the green light, equipment and training of the Soviet Union and China launched an all-out offensive to push the UN out of South Korea. Truman belatedly decided the US should defend South Korea. This photo is of Leo Erles just prior to the emergency call-up of the 25th Division in July 1950 to counter the North Korean Army's rapid and massive invasion of the South.
