Leonard Reams Grisham was born on March 17, 1871 in Tennessee United States to Joseph "Joe" C. Grisham and Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Harville, and had siblings Mary Elizabeth Grisham, James Sydney Grisham, David Burton Grisham, Martha Grisham, Elizabeth Jane Grisham, Edward Blant Grisham, and Tennie Alice Grisham. He married Rosie Ellen McKinney, and died at age 76 years old on August 21, 1947. Leonard Grisham was buried at Dickens Cemetery Maggart Rd., in Elmwood, Smith County.

In 1908, at the age of 37 years old, Leonard was alive when a 7.1 earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed 70,000 to 100,000 people in southern Italy and Sicily. The earthquake, lasting 30 to 40 seconds, occurred in the Strait of Messina which was between the region of Calabria (at the "toe" of Italy) and the island of Sicily and destruction from it occurred in a 186 mile radius. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to hit Europe.
