Leonilla Wurzer was born on August 11, 1903 in Willey, Carroll County, Iowa United States to Henry Wurzer and Gertrude (Kerper) Wurzer, and had siblings Colette Miller, Lawrence Wurzer, Ann Wurzer, Barbara Wurzer, Mary Wurzer, Gertrude Wurzer, Frances Wurzer, John Wurzer, and Henry Wurzer. Leonilla Wurzer married Dan Yourell in 1937, and died at age 91 years old on November 23, 1994 in Carroll.

In 1903, in the year that Leonilla Wurzer was born, the United States Department of Commerce and Labor was created by President Theodore Roosevelt to control the excesses of big business. Renamed the Department of Commerce 10 years later, many departments concerned with workers were transferred to the Department of Labor at that time. In 1944, she was 41 years old when on June 6th, the largest amphibious invasion in history was launched - the Normandy landing (called D-Day). Soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, and the Free French landed on Normandy Beach and were later joined by Poland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers were involved. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on D-Day - Allied casualties on the first day were at least 10,000. 4,414 were confirmed dead.
