The day after my wedding in 1985, while I was honeymooning with my husband, my Grandmother Lee had a massive stroke. The doctors told my mother that Leontina would most likely die. My mother was alone handling this devastation. Grandma was still struggling by the time I returned to Erie. Eventually, however, she was well enough to go to rehab. Not only did Grandma get better, she managed to crochet a stained-glass window-like granny square afghan with no two squares alike!! Thirty-six years later, that afghan is still beautiful, and nary a thread loose. Grandma wasn't allowed to drive after the stroke which rankled her to no end and she had me take her to the store every week to get more yarn. When I'm discouraged, I think of Grandma crocheting that afghan after having had a massive stroke that had completely paralyzed her left side. She never failed to love people and give them the best she could.

What a wonderful, inspiring memory of what sounds like an amazing woman. As I get older, I also think of my grandmother - a woman who kept going, no matter what. Thank you so much for sharing your memory!
Thanks so much! 🧡🤗🙏🕊️

On Mother's Day sometime in the 1980s, my Grandmother and Mother and I drove to Northeast, PA and had dinner at Bova's Italian Restaurant. On the way back to town, we visited Erie Cemetery to see the azalea and rhododendron garden. Lucky us, a friendly gray-striped kitty cat joined our picture taking group. A passerby took this picture of three generations. Each of us had different spaghetti sauce recipes and it could be a bit difficult sometimes navigating generational and personality differences. Nevertheless, love always triumphs and among the three here was love aplenty!
