Uncle Les was my favourite Uncle although 'uncle' by marriage to my mother's sister Leona. My mother would take me to visit them on their farm in Orbost. He drove a T Model Ford and I always got sick in the car. he woul take me out in the early mornings with his big draft horse and a raking sled to dig up the fields. He had a glass eye and he'd take it out to scare me...wasn't really scared, it was ust a joke, I recall the day that Aunt Leona (Lee) told Mum and I that Uncle les was taking her to Fiji, she was so excited. She used to call Les "Crunch" but I never learnt why.

This is one of my mothr Wendy's five sisters;;;Aunty Lee. I only knew her briefly. Mum and I used to visit them at their farm at Bairnsdale. I'd get up very early some mornings to go with Uncle Les (Uncle "Crunch" was what Aunty Lee would call him)...we'd go digging up potatoes. We'd stand on a wooden platform behind a large draft horse. I used to enjoy that. I must have been about 4 and on a visit from Nauru Island where my father David Henderson worked for the British Phosphate Commission after WWII. I recall that Aunty Lee (Leona) told us that she and Uncle Les were going to Fiji and she was very excited.

I also recall that they lived in an old farm house and that I was intrigued by the fact that the ceilings were made of stretched hessian.

I used to also be intrigued by all the colourful parrots around the farm.
Uncle "Crunch" Les had a glass eye and he used to like taking it out and chasing
me around the house with it in his hand to scare me.
