  • Introduction

    Lillian Katie Bradley was born to Robert S. Bradley and Katie Moss (1891 - 1982). She had siblings Gladys (1912 - 1995), William (1913 - 198)), and Robert Bradley (1917 - 2000). She never married. A lifelong resident of Tyler, Texas and a retired schoolteacher, Lillian was an accomplished woman. She graduated from Texas College, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and the University of Texas at Austin. She was the first black woman to receive a doctorate from the University of Texas and was also the first black woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin. Lillian Bradley also wrote and co-authored several mathematics books and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Texas College Alumni Association, and The Collegiate Club. She was survived by a brother, Robert, a sister, Gladys, and many cousins and other relatives. See Lillian K Bradley: Obituary.

    The following obituary appeared in the Tyler Morning Telegraph (Tyler, Texas) on Tuesday, February 14, 1995: DR. LILLIAN K. BRADLEY SERVICES SET IN TYLER Services for Dr. Lillian K. Bradley, 76, Tyler, are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Chapel CME Church with the Rev. James A. Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery in Overton under direction of Sterling Funerals Directors, Tyler. Memorial services are scheduled for 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Dr. Bradley died Saturday at a Tyler hospital. Born October 15, 1918, in Tyler to Robert and Katie Bradley, she was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School, Texas College, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Bradley was the first black woman to receive a doctorate from the University of Texas and the first black woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a retired school teacher and write and co-authored several mathematics books. She was a member of Miles Chapel CME Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Texas College Alumni Association and The Collegiate Club. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Cathey Bradley, Tyler; one sister, Gladys Bradley Daniels, Dallas; one niece, Penny Bradley, Tyler; and numerous cousins and other relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Paul Lewis, Dr. Bobby Stinson, Harold Dean, J.F. Finley, L.C. Warren, Andrew Melontree, Melvin Brewer, Roscoe Mumphrey, and Wilton Pruitt. Honorary pallbearers will be stewards and trustees of Miles Chapel CME Church.
