My parents, John and Marilyn Canter, lived at 1901 SR 788, Jackson, OH. Mr. Branagan lived in a shanty up the road from us. His home had a dirt floor and he heated with lump coal. My dad owned a school bus that had been converted into a travel camper. Dad convinced Mr. Branagan to move into it so he would be closer to my parents and have a better living environment in the winter months. The bus was about 100 yards from my parents' house. As Mr. Branagan's physical abilities declined my parents moved him into a small camper next to their house. He seemed very happy having my parents in his life. They strived to keep him as independent as possible. Mr. Branagan talked about wanting to be a country music star on TV, but when we pulled out a camcorder he was too shy to sing for us. He was fascinated seeing himself on video though. We believe he served in the military; perhaps he was stationed in France at some point. His physical abilities continued to decline and he eventually moved into my parents' house. My parents helped him apply for State benefits so he could have a small monthly income and food. Mr. Branagan didn't have a birth certificate so his name was written in my dad's family Bible as evidence of his birth so he could receive State benefits. (I still have that Bible.) He enjoyed being with my parents, but his health declined to the point my parents weren't able to care for him so he moved into a nursing facility. My parents helped with his funeral expenses and they bought a cemetary plot for him. His grave is close by the graves of my dad, brother and niece.
