In 1897, in the year that London Shirer was born, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".

In 1927, he was 30 years old when aviator and media darling Charles Lindbergh, age 25, made the first successful solo TransAtlantic flight. "Lucky Lindy" took off from Long Island in New York and flew to Paris, covering 3,600 statute miles and flying for 33 1⁄2-hours. His plane "The Spirit of St. Louis" was a fabric-covered, single-seat, single-engine "Ryan NYP" high-wing monoplane designed by both Lindbergh and the manufacturer's chief engineer.

On Saint Patrick’s Day We are ALL a bit Irish
It's often been said that on St. Patrick's day, we are all a little Irish. And certainly, on March 17th all around the world people - especially across the U.K., U.S., Canada, and Australia - celebrate the Irish culture and their traditions. Who doesn't love a good Irish ale with corn beef and cabbage while chasing the mythical leprechaun, a red-haired colleen or lad, or doing a step dance (or think Riverdance)? Today is the day to celebrate the Irish people and their traditions across cultures - or to just party! These photos celebrate and remember the Irish people and their rich culture throughout history.
