The heavens are a bit brighter today with the addition of Loretta Peace (Sullivan) La Fex, who passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2005. Born on Armistice Day, November 11, 1927, Loretta grew up in Eastwood with her parents, one sister and six brothers. She attended Vocational High School, and in 1947, she married John C. La Fex. For the next 58 years, they made their lives together. They were blessed with four children, Cheryl, Johnny, Tommy and Bryant. Later, their spouses, and subsequently, six grandchildren, Shana, Jessica, Margaret, Annie, Lissette and Nicholas expanded her family. Loretta's greatest joys were with her family, and she indeed brought us all together many times. Her second career was born after she graduated from Upstate Medical Center as a nurse. She worked for 10 years at Upstate Medical Center, and then as a nurse for private patients and the medical registry. It was her years as a hospice nurse that best defined Loretta's spirit. Countless patients experienced the deep compassion and gentle touch of Loretta. Hospice nursing defined Loretta's love for people, and her commitment for individual dignity during the last stages of life. She will be a huge loss felt by many people. Loretta loved to have fun, and she was active in Beta Sigma Phi and Westhill Country Club's Croquet Club. She and John are longtime communicants of Holy Family Church in Fairmount. She is survived by her husband, John of Camillus; her four children Cheryl (Richard) La Fex-Maestri of Westvale, John Jr. of New York City, Thomas (Susan) of Westvale, Bryant (Nancy) of Syracuse; as well as her grandchildren. Her sister, Cecelia Fletcher, and brothers, Eugene, Thomas, John, Everett and Myron Sullivan, all of the Syracuse area. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Warners, NY. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, 3700 W. Genesee St., Fairmount.
