  • Ethnicity & Family History

Louise's parent, John Lewis Cassidy and Alice Evaline Angle Cassidy, were first cousins. John's mother and Alice's father were brother and sister. John and Alice met and married in Barry Illinois, home of Alice's family. The family had come there from Lynchburg Virginia before the Civil War. Louise was born in Barry and the family moved to Minneapolis before she was ten years old. Alice's mother, Margaret Crandall Angle, was a New England Crandall and like the rest of her family, was raised as a Seventh Day Baptist, in Rensselaer County, New York. A group of interrelated families of the same faith, including Margaret's, relocated to Barry, Illinois after the opening of the Erie Canal.
  • Professional Career

Louise Cassidy was an artist, a lifelong painter, and taught at Art Instruction Schools (AIS) for her entire working life. Art Instruction Schools was a correspondence school famous for its "Draw Me!" matchbooks. The Schools' most famous alum and then instructor was Charles Schulz, who remained a friend of Louise Cassidy's for her life. Two of her paintings from the 1930's are in the collection of the Weisman Art Museum on the University of Minnesota campus. (See and ) One of Louise's colleagues at AIS was Jim Sasseville, a cartoonist who was, for a time, a 'ghost' cartoonist for Charles Schulz. One of Sasseville' own strips was "Aunty Climax." ""Aunty Climax," produced in early 1957 -- just prior to Jim’s ghost work for Dell comics -- was a single-panel gag strip that starred a feisty little old lady who was far sharper than most people assumed. She was based on Louise Cassidy, an AIS colleague who also was the landlady for the building where Jim briefly lived with Charles Cuddy. Jim produced a few dozen "Aunty Climax" panels." -- from the website Five Cents Please at .
