Lucy May (Scambler) Wattie of Kerang Australia was born in 1886 in Carisbrook, VIC to John Scambler and Anne (Hewitson) Scambler. She had siblings Eilzabeth Scambler, Alice Scambler, Sarah Amelia Scambler, Arthur George Scrambler, Mary Louisa Scambler, John Scambler, Thomas Henry Scambler, Annie Scambler, and Francis Scambler. She married James Arthur Wattie in 1907 in Victoria, and had children Frederick James Wattie, Arthur Scambler Wattie, Norman Richard Wattie, Lola Elizabeth Donnellon, and John Douglas Wattie. Lucy Wattie died at age 37 years old in 1923 in Castlemaine, Mount Alexander Shire County, VIC.

In 1886, in the year that Lucy May (Scambler) Wattie was born, on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.
