Mary Louisa Scambler of Newstead Australia was born in 1876 to John Scambler and Anne (Hewitson) Scambler. She had siblings Eilzabeth Scambler, Alice Scambler, Sarah Amelia Scambler, Arthur George Scrambler, John Scambler, Thomas Henry Scambler, Annie Scambler, Francis Scambler, and Lucy May (Scambler) Wattie. Mary Scambler died at age 9 years old in 1885 in Newstead.

In 1876, in the year that Mary Louisa Scambler was born, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."

In 1881, at the age of just 5 years old, Mary was alive when on March 4th, James A. Garfield became the 20th President of the United States. On July 2nd, he was shot by Charles Guiteau, a lawyer, in Washington, D.C. The wound became infected and Garfield died on September 19. Vice President Chester A. Arthur immediately became the 21st President.
