In 1948, my parents became tenants of Howard and his wife Mabel in the apartment next door above a garage. The neighborhood was called Custer Station for a stop on the old Philadelphia & Reading's Stony Creek line. When we lived there, the postal address was Norristown.

Howard and Mabel were like my grandparents. I recall the front room had lots of big windows and a big overstuffed chair where I would sit with Howard while he read to me.. Mabel kept her collection of glass birds by the back door.. I was always fascinated by the swans with colored water.
I have no recollection of what Howard did for a living. Years later, my mother told me that Howard had a drinking problem and he would never allow me to see him when he was drunk. The drinking would account for why his car came home one night missing the driver's door.
We moved from there in 1952 when I was 5. It was a great place to be a kid.
