  • Obituary

The oldest of six children, Mamie McArthur as a child was the forever imp. As a wife she became a widow early in her life and as a Mother she raised 3 children through the start of the Great Depression on her own. Mamie used her what her mother passed down to her in sewing to help with income along with her husbands business that was left to her also. She raised 2 wonderful boys to adulthood and one beautiful girl to womanhood. Her greatest delight was in telling people that she was born in jail. She always failed to include her father was the sheriff and the jail was part of their house. For one year between 1942 and 1943 the fate of her oldest child was unknown. During this time she wrote the Government and members of his unit in the army. In 1943 she would bury her oldest child Griffith M Eldridge. Though his body was interred in Saint Avoids France, she would have a marker made for him in Americus Georgia so that she could feel a closeness to him. Mamie lived to see and enjoy three great grandchildren, though now there are many more. Mamie was a master at needle crafting and sewed many of her first great grandchild's baby clothes. She excelled in smocking a lost art today. She also was a master at Angle Food Cakes, being known for her recipe which people would request and wait for. She was stubborn, hardheaded to a point and loving with no ends. She embodied the definition of a real Southern Lady and made sure her children, grandchild and great grandchildren knew what that meant and to never forget.
