Mamie Ruth White 84, of Sterlingworth Street, died Sunday August 20, 2017 at Three Rivers Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born in Bertie County November 29, 1932 to the late Gurley and Lenora Jernigan White and was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Baker; 5 brothers, Clayton, Dan, Aubrey Lee, Eugene and Bob White. Mamie Ruth was a retired seamstress and member of Askewville Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 23, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Bob Skeens. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

Survivors include daughters, Geraldine Harrell, Kathy Fields both of Windsor, Tammy Leigh Murwin of Ahoskie; sons, Larry H. Hoggard of Ahoskie, Clayton D. Murwin of England UK & Jacksonville Fl., and William Everette “Billy” Murwin of Snug Harbor; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

In 1932, in the year that Mamie Ruth White was born, on February 27th, actress Elizabeth Taylor was born in London. Her parents were Americans living in London and when she was 7, the family moved to Los Angeles. Her first small part in a movie was in There's One Born Every Minute in 1942 but her first starring role was in National Velvet in 1944. She became as famous for her 8 marriages (to 7 people) as she was for her beauty and films.

In 1944, Mamie was only 12 years old when on December 16th, The Battle of the Bulge began in the Ardennes forest on the Western Front. Lasting for a little over a month, the battle began with a surprise attack by Germany on the Allied forces The U.S. suffered their highest casualties of any operation in World War II - 89,000 were casualties, around 8,600 killed - but Germany also severely depleted their resources and they couldn't be replaced.

In 1968, Mamie was 36 years old when on June 5th, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles by Sirhan after celebrating his win in the California presidential primary. He died the next day at Good Samaritan Hospital.

In 1977, by the time she was 45 years old, on January 21st, President Carter pardoned "draft dodgers" - men who avoided the draft during the Vietnam War. He fulfilled a campaign promise with the pardon. But it only applied to civilian evaders - the estimated 500,000 to 1 million active-duty personnel who went AWOL were not included.

In 1993, Mamie was 61 years old when on January 20th, William J. Clinton became the 42nd President of the United States. He beat incumbent George H.W. Bush who was seeking his second term. Clinton won 43.01% of the popular vote to Bush's 37.45%. An independent candidate, Ross Perot, won 18.91% - the most votes for an independent candidate since Teddy Roosevelt's run for President in 1912.
