Maria Ann Simcock of Richmond Australia was born in 1864 in Richmond to Timothy Simcock and Charlotte (Close) Simcock. She had siblings Charles Robert Read Simcock, Henry"Harry" Simcock, Charlotte Mary (Simcock) Bruce, George Ernest Simcock, Edward Joseph Kimber Simcock, William David Simcock, and Louise Marie Simcock. Maria Simcock died at age 2 years old in 1866.

In 1864, in the year that Maria Ann Simcock was born, on June 15th, Arlington National Cemetery was created in Arlington Virginia. 200 acres from the grounds of Robert E. Lee's home were set aside to be a military cemetery. The home and grounds had been in Lee's wife's family - she was a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington.
