    Maria Lavalle Urbina (1908-1996). Born in 1908 in Campeche City, she was a primary school teacher, lawyer, and the first woman to qualify as a lawyer in her home state; first female Supreme Court of Justice of the District and Federal Territories 1947th 1954; First woman to preside over the Senate of the Republic in 1965, by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the XLVI-XLVII Legislature. She represented Mexico in 30 international meetings and assemblies of the OAS Inter-American Commission on Women. In their recognitions they highlight: ′′ Woman of the Year ", in 1963; UN award for eminent services to the cause of human rights in 1973; medal of honour to the legal merit of the National Lawyers Association In 1979; Just Sierra Medal of the Government of Campeche in 1981; Belisario Domínguez medal of the Senate of the Republic in 1985. Shee died on April 23, 1996. In Campeche there is a cultural foundation that bears her name.

    Lavalle Urbina, María (1908–1996) María Lavalle Urbina was a lawyer, public official, and early Mexican feminist. Born on May 24, 1908, in Campeche, she grew up in an important political family. After working as an elementary school teacher, she became the first woman to graduate in law from the state university in 1945 and immediately entered public life. A member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), in 1947 she became the first female magistrate of the superior court of justice of the Mexican Federal District. From 1954 to 1964 she worked in the secretariat of the interior. In 1964 she became the first female president of the Mexican senate to be elected from her home state. She served on United Nations and national commissions and presided over the Alianza de Mujeres de México (Alliance of Mexican Women) in the 1960s and the Academia Mexicana de Educación (Mexican Academy of Education). From 1976 to 1980 she served as undersecretary of public education, and from 1982 to 1984 directed the nation's textbook commission. The author of many articles on delinquency, human rights, and women, she received awards such as Woman of the Year (1963), the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights (1973), the Justo Sierra Medal from the state of Campeche (1981), the Belisario Dominguez Medal from the Mexican Senate (1985), and the René Cassin Prize from the Mexican Tribuna Israelita. She died on April 23, 1996.

    María Lavalle Urbina (born May 24, 1908, in Campeche, Campeche) was a Mexican lawyer and politician who served as the first female president of the Mexican Senate. Education and professional career [link] Lavalle Urbina, an elementary school teacher, was the first woman in her native Campeche to receive a bachelor's degree in law. She was the first female magistrate of the Superior Court of Justice of the Mexican Federal District. From 1954 to 1964 she worked in the Secretariat of the Interior. In 1964 Lavalle Urbina and Alicia Arellano, both from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), were elected the first women in the Senate of Mexico. In 1965 she became the first woman to preside over the Senate. From 1976 to 1980 she served as under-secretary of Public Education. She was a member of different associations including Alianza de Mujeres de México, Academia Mexicana de Educación and Asociación de Derecho de la Familia de la Asociación Nacional de Abogados. She was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including Woman of the year (1963), The United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights (1973), The Justo Sierra Medal from the state of Campeche (1981), The Belisario Dominguez Medal from the Mexican Senate (1985) and the René Cassin prize from the Mexican Tribuna Israelita. María Lavalle Urbina died on April 23, 1996; she is interred at the Panteón de Dolores, in the Rotunda of Illustrious Persons.
