Maria Votruba Klauzinski, 93, of Holden passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 29, 2018 after a brief stay at the Holden Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was born in Lesko, in southeastern Poland and endured the German invasion and later the occupation by Soviet troops during WWII (1939-1945). Soon after the war, she met and married her loving and devoted husband, Marian, in 1946. Maria and Marian had their first son, Richard, in 1947. In 1950, they came to the United States. They had two more sons, Henry and George. Henry passed away in 1988. Marian passed away in 2011. Maria is survived by her sisters, Janina Tawczynski and Elizabeth Ermanski, her sons, Richard and George, daughters-in-law, Elizabeth and Carol Klauzinski, her grandchildren, Alice, Philip, and Christopher Klauzinski, and her great-grandchildren, Dalton, Catherine and Luke H.

In 1925, in the year that Maria (Votruba) Klauzinski was born, on November 28th, radio station WSM broadcast the Grand Ole Opry for the first time. Originally airing as “The WSM Barn Dance”, the Opry (a local term for "opera") was dedicated to honoring country music and in its history has featured the biggest stars and acts in country music.

In 1937, at the age of only 12 years old, Maria was alive when on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
