In 1801, in the year that Martha Dyke was born, on November 10th, the state of Kentucky outlawed dueling. The oath of office for Kentucky has since said: ""I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God."

In 1821, she was 20 years old when on March 5th, President James Monroe was sworn in for his second term. Because March 4th - the day that the inauguration was supposed to be held - was a Sunday, Monroe moved it to Monday, the 5th. Also, the swearing in was held indoors because of a snowstorm.
