Martin Rivas was born in Saucillo, Mexico (approx 80 miles southeast of Chihuahua). After his mother (Aurelia) died, his father (Epifanio), remarried Maria de Jesus. Maria de Jesus was real mean with her step children, Martin and Juliana; For example, she didn't feed them until after her children eat first. Martin use to call her "ancha" because of her large hips. His father (Epifanio) tied a rope around him and drug him. He had big scars from it. Because of all this, Martin left home at a young age and came into the United States at the Palomas border crossing near Deming, NM. It cost him 1 penny to enter the U.S. He settled in Rincon, NM where he then married Margarita Basques (or Basquez or Vasquez) on February 28, 1908 in Rincon, NM. (Marriage Record Book No. 1, Page No. 346). Margarita was born May 25, 1892 in Springer, NM and her guardians were Mr. and Mrs. Librado and Francisca Vasquez.
