Marvin Van Rapoport's History: 1930 - 1986

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Marvin "Van" Rapoport was a restaurateur with the famous SPINDLETOP RESTAURANT on 47th Street in the Theater District in Manhattan in the 1960's and 1970's. Celebrities flocked to his restaurant because he had great food and a charismatic personality. As soon as he met me he asked me for a date and we went on a "double date" with movie star Virginia Bruce. Ironically, Virginia was a close friend to my surrogate Mom, Jan Clayton.

NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE. DEVON, Pa., June 5—Marvin Van Rapoport stood outside the ring at the Devon horse show tonight and looked admiringly at Spindletop Showdown, his great conformation hunter. “Each year, I think he can't possibly improve,” said Van Rapoport, “and yet, each year he does. This year he seems to look better and he certainly has matured some.” Spindletop Showdown had just done the expected and captured the regular conformation hunter championship at the concluding session of the 75th edition of the show. The 7‐year‐old bay gelding scored 21½ points to 14½ for the runner‐up (Mr. and Mrs. Gene Cunningham's Old Dominion). Last year, Spindletown Show down won the championship in 10 of the 11 shows in which he competed. It was the same story in 1969. “I've had a great deal of enjoyment out of him,” said Van Rapoport, owner of the Spindletop restaurant in New York's theater district. “So I'm going to put him up for sale. “He's been cleaning up for three years, and since he's only 7 years old, I feel that some one else should get some fun out of him. I hope to retire several trophies (as he did the Cap and Gown challenge trophy at Devon) during the year and then sell him.” “Pattie Heuckeroth of Darien, Conn., daughter of Otto Heuckeroth, long‐time manager of the Ox Ridge Hunt Club rode Mrs. L. J. Schettino's Al die Belle to the regular working hunter championship.
  • Personal Life & Family

September 15, 1974. Not many members of the equestrian set would be interested in purchasing a horse and sending it to Greece. Marvin Van Rapoport is one who did it. He not only bought a horse and sent it to Greece, but in the end was almost completely frustrated. Horse Show News But to the beginning…. Van Rapoport, who owns the Spindletop Restaurant in the theater district, has been an ardent amateur horseman all his life. Until two years ago, he owned Spindletop Showdown, the premier conformation hunter in the country. Recently, he bought an apartment in Athens as a vacation retreat. It was on a trip to Greece last year that he did some checking and found that there were some riding clubs in Athens and that the Balkan Games listed equestrian events on the program. “I wanted to compete last year,” said Van Rapoport the other day, “and actually was invited by some of the people in Athens to ride. But the games came on too fast. “I decided to point toward this year, so I began looking around for a horse.” He found the mount at a small show in Westchester last winter. The horse, later named Spindletop, won two classes and finished second in another. That, thought Van Rapoport, is the horse for me. “I wanted a good horse,” Van Rapoport said. “But I wasn't looking for another Idle Dice. The quality of riding and horses in the Balkan Games hasn't progressed that far yet.” He bought the mount from Nilesway Farms in Purchase, N.Y., and began making plans to get Spindletop to Horse Show Calendar Today—Nassau County, C. After all, not many horses take trips like that, and he was inexperienced. “Well, I was amazed to find that when he was unloaded in Athens, Spindletop was munching hay just as if he never left the States.” Van Rapoport, who meanwhile had joined the Hellenic Riding Club in Athens, rode Spindletop in one show and won the championship. “The Greeks were impressed with Spindletop,” Van Rapoport said, “because he is not a big horse. They feel that the bigger the horse, the better he'll jump, which, of course, we learned long ago was not necessarily true. Mrs. Barbara Niles, who owns Nilesway Farms with her husband, headed for Greece to help Van Rapoport train Spindletop.
