Mary was born in Melbourne VIC Australia. Her parents were immigrants from the UK. Her father was George Ball ( 1830- 1902) Born in Northamptonshire England Her mother was Mary Shanahan Ball ( 1829-1886) . Born in Limerick Ireland Marriage was in 1854. They may have immigrated to Australia just afterwards They apparently lived in Ballarat for a time. George was a police officer for a while in Melbourne and then the family moved to the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand Mary was the second child of nine children. The first 4 , including Mary, were born in Victoria Australia, the last 5 were born in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. When Mary was well in her 20’s, she met Samuel James Payton, an Australian who was touring New Zealand. They were subsequently married in NZ and eventually went back to Australia, where they lived in Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne. They had at least 6 (?) children, three of whom died as infants. The other children were Elfrieda, Albert and Judith, who all survived to adulthood/ their 70’s. Mary and Samuel, together with two of their infant children are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery, plot MGC - COE - Comp - EE - No - 1275
