Mary (Cousland) Daniels was born on July 10, 1925 to John Cousland Sr. and Mary (Patience) Cousland, and had siblings John Cousland, Jean (Cousland) Graham, and William Patience Cousland. She married William Lawrence Richard "Bill" Daniels, and had a child William John Daniels. Mary Daniels died at age 79 years old on July 11, 2004.

    The Herald Sun, Melbourne, 13 July 2004. DANIELS, Mary. The day after a wonderful celebration for her 79th Birthday. Mary died peacefully on Sunday July 11, 2004, after a long illness. Wife of the late Bill Daniels, mother of Glenice and John, grandmother of Mike, Nick, Kate, Janet and Cate, and great grandmother of Anais, Zack, Rackshan and Zoe. Sister of John, Don and Willie ( all dec. ) and Eve and Jean.

In 1925, in the year that Mary Daniels ( Cousland was born, on November 28th, radio station WSM broadcast the Grand Ole Opry for the first time. Originally airing as “The WSM Barn Dance”, the Opry (a local term for "opera") was dedicated to honoring country music and in its history has featured the biggest stars and acts in country music.

In 1943, by the time she was 18 years old, on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
