Mary Ellen (Middlin) Close of Ballarat East Australia was born on December 24, 1867 in Ballarat to Edward Thomas Middlin and Sarah Trevean Middlin. She had a brother Charles Henry Middlin. She married Robert Maxwell Close in 1889, and had children Albertis Maxwell Close, Adeline Annie Fredman, Hector Norman Close, Stanley Robert Close, Leslie Gordon Close, Arthur Edgar Close, Muriel Eleanor Close, Robina Sarah Close, and Herbert Trevean Close. Mary Close died at age 49 years old on November 27, 1917 in VIC.

In 1877, by the time she was merely 10 years old, on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.
