Mary Maud (Lewthwaite) of Melbourne, VIC Australia was born in 1871 in Melbourne to John Case Lewthwaite and Ellen Maria (Mcloughlin) Lewthwaite. She had siblings Annie Helena (Lewthwaite) Kelso, Florence Elizabeth Lewthwaite, Grace Margaret Helen Lewthwaite, Nellie Blanche Lewthwaite, Mona Lewthwaite, and John Douglas Lewthwaite. She married George Sutherland Gilchrist in 1913, and had a child George Gilchrist. Mary died at age 64 years old in 1935.

In 1871, in the year that Mary Maud Lewthwaite was born, on March 29th, Royal Albert Hall in London was officially opened by Queen Victoria. Construction had begun in 1867 and the hall was named after Queen Victoria's husband, who had died in 1861 - 10 years before.

In 1885, at the age of just 14 years old, Mary was alive when on June 17th, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor. Two hundred thousand people and hundreds of boats greeted the statue. It had to be assembled but that had to wait until the pedestal was completed the following April.
