In 1817, in the year that Mary Norris was born, King Ferdinand VII of Spain - who ruled Cuba - issued a royal decree that made the production and sale of tobacco a legal endeavor in Cuba. The decree created the birth of the Cuban cigar industry.

In 1826, Mary was just 9 years old when on February 13th, the American Temperance Society was founded in Boston. In the beginning, the Temperance Society promoted abstaining from alcohol but with time it pushed for abolishing alcohol. Drinking was a severe stress on many families, with drunkenness contributing to poverty and abuse.

In 1835, when she was 18 years old, on January 8th, the U.S. Federal Government declared that President Andrew Jackson had paid off the national debt - for the first and only time.

In 1846, by the time she was 29 years old, on June 15th, the Oregon Treaty - between Great Britain and the US - was signed. The Treaty agreed that the 49th parallel would be the border between the United States and Canada. Since the actual border wasn't clear in the Treaty, dispute about what was Canada and what was the US continued for a decade.

In 1852, in the year of Mary Norris's passing, on March 2nd, an experimental steam fire engine was tested in the US. Great Britain had begun using "steam pumpers" after 1829, when they were invented.
