Matthew Greagen of Burnie, TAS Australia was born in 1875 in Stawell, Northern Grampians Shire County, VIC to Elizabeth Walsh Greagen and Matthew Greagen. He had siblings Elizabeth Greagan, Margaret Mary (Greagen) Bennet, Edward Arthur Greegan, and William Henry Greagen. He married Louisa Eva Bildstein Greagen, and had children Edward William Greagen, Lillian May Greagen Lewis, and Doris Greagen Johnstone. Matthew Greagen died at age 54 years old in 1929 in Burnie, TAS.

In 1875, in the year that Matthew Greagen was born, on March 1st, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. The Act prohibited racial discrimination in both public accommodations and jury duty. Opposed by the public, the "public accommodations" sections of the Act were overturned by the Supreme Court eight years later.
