Matthew was a veteran who served during World War II in the United States Army as a First Sergeant.

Matthew was a high school principal for 29 years at FAMU High in Florida. FAMU high is a public charter school that is connected to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida.

Matthew Herbert Estaras was born to Matias Francisco Estaras, born 1893, and Maria Manuella Barros (1895 - 1979) on January 4th, 1914 in Florida and he had one sister, Verdelle E. (1920 - 2012). Matthew Estaras married Willie B. "Sweetpea" Turner (1914 - 2007). They didn't have children. He was survived by his nieces and nephews. He served on the board of Being A Man; served as president of the Florida Secondary Principals Association and the Florida State Teachers Association; and was a member of the NAACP, the Tallahassee Urban League and the Early Risers Exercise Club.
