Matthew Upcott Rundell was born in 1827 to William Rundell and Lucy (Upcott) Rundell, and had a brother Joshua Upcott Rundell. Matthew Rundell married Louisa (Ryall) Rundell, and died at age 78 years old in 1905.

In 1827, in the year that Matthew Upcott Rundell was born, on May 25th, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge. The fountain pen would make inkwells obsolete. Poenaru's patent used a barrel made from a large swan quill (part of the feather).
