    In 1942 he enlisted in the Army, then transitioned into the Army Air Corps. During World War II, he served with the 14th Air Force Flying Tigers in the China-Burma-India theatre, flying the C-46. He flew 153 missions over the “hump’ as a cargo pilot, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal, two Presidential Unit Citations and the Chinese Air Force Pilot Wings. He retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel. His last assignment was with the C-124 Group in Barksdale A.F.B., Louisiana.

    Funeral services for Lt. Col. Maurice David “Dave” Shimic, Ret., 90, of the Mims Community near Avinger, Texas will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday May 16, 2012 at Mims Chapel United Methodist Church with the Reverend Doctor Gail Harrelson officiating. Interment with full Military Honors by Barksdale AFB will follow in Mims Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening, May 15, 2012 at the funeral home. He passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012 in Jefferson. Mr. Shimic was born April 10, 1922 on a farm in Linconville (Marion County), Kansas, to Joseph Shimic and Margaret Grinstaff. He grew up in Guide Rock, Nebraska. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army, then transitioned into the Army Air Corps. During World War II, he served with the 14th Air Force Flying Tigers in the China-Burma-India theatre, flying the C-46. He retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel. His last assignment was with the C-124 Group in Barksdale A.F.B., Louisiana. While at Barksdale A.F.B. he met and married JoAnn DeWitt. After retirement, they moved to Pearland, Texas where Dave worked for the Federal Aviation Administration. After 16 years of service, he retired from the FAA. He spent the remainder of his career working for Britt Airways, a family-owned airline. Dave was proud of his military service and his family. He was a faithful member of the Jefferson Rotary Club, former Rotary Club President, and former Assistant District Governor and a Paul Harris Fellow. His sons, Charles Wesley Shimic and Stephen Eugene Shimic preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Edith JoAnn Shimic of the Crestwood community, sister, Rosella Imhoff of Guide Rock, Nebraska, daughter-in-law, Donna Shimic of Westminster, Colorado, five grandchildren, Lynette Land and husband Paul, James Josef, Darla Okada and husband Mike, and David Shimic; three great grandchildren, Aidan, Brett, and Evangeline Land. Pallbearers will be Aaron Fitzpatrick, Joel Franklin, Gary Carroll, Paul Land, Dwayne Imhoff and Mel Friend. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Jefferson Rotary Club. Memorials may be made to Mims Chapel United Methodist Church – 13714 FM 729 – Avinger, TX 75630, or the Jefferson Rotary Club – P.O. Box 5 – Jefferson, TX 75657. Special thanks to Pine Hill Nursing Home and Staff and Heart to Heart Hospice for their loving care to David.
