JEFFERSON - Funeral services for Stephen Eugene Shimic, 52, of The Colony, Texas, will be 10 a.m. today, December 30, 2010, at Mims United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Dowden officiating. Interment will follow in Mims Chapel Cemetery, with full military honors from Barksdale Air Force Base, under the direction of Haggard Funeral Home of Jefferson. Mr. Shimic was born February 8, 1958 in Richmond, Va. He passed away December 25, 2010, in The Colony, Texas. Mr. Shimic began his Air Force career when he enlisted after high school in June 1976. In August, 1976, Steve graduated from basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. His first duty assignment was at Reese AFB, Texas, as an airfield operations specialist. In 1978, Steve received his first overseas assignment to Alaska. In 1981, Steve was assigned to Carswell AFB, Texas. In 1983, he received orders to Yokota AB in Tokyo, Japan. Steve worked at base operations. On September 18. 1986, Steve married his wife, Donna, at the American Embassy in Tokyo. From there, the two received a joint assignment to Lackland AFB, Texas, in 1987. Steve was then transferred to Randolph AFB, Texas. In 1988, he was NCOIC of base operations and later promoted to assistant airfield manager. In 1989, Steve was transferred to Mather AFB, Calif., as NCOIC of airfield management and flight data. He also graduated from the Community College of the Air Force with an AAS degree in airway science in 1992. Steve graduated from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) Joint Military Attache School (JMAS) and Executive Self-Defense and Anti-Terrorism training in May of 1993 and arrived at post at the American Embassy Muscat, Oman, in April as USAF operations NCO. After his tour in Oman, Steve was assigned to Altus AFB, Okla., in July 1995 and assumed the role of superintendent, airfield management for the 97th Operational Support Squadron. He was then promoted to master sergeant on October 1, and in January of 1997, he stepped into the position of chief, airfield management. From there, Steve was selected for a special duty assignment with DIA and was transferred to Washington, D.C., in July of 1997. He graduated from language training, DIA JMAS, and Executive Self-Defense and Anti-Terrorism training in June 1998. He also graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in July 1998 with a bachelors degree in professional aeronautics with a minor in aviation safety. In August of 1998, Steve was assigned to the American Embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and assumed the position of operations coordinator. Steve's family evacuated in February of 1999 and went to their Safe Haven in Gainesville, Ga. A month later, Steve was evacuated and ordered to Washington, D.C., to work in the Defense intelligence Agency HQ in TDY status. Steve departed the DIA in August of 1999 and was reassigned to 22 Operations Support Squadron at McConnell AFB, Kan., to serve as the superintendent of airfield management. This would be Steve's final assignment before retiring on November 1, 2000. While in the military, Stephen received numerous medals including Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal With One Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal With One Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Achievement Medal With One Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Meritorious Unit Award with Two Oak Leaf Clusters and AF Outstanding Unit Award with Three Oak Leaf Clusters. He is survived by his parents, David and JoAnn Shimic of Jefferson; children, Josef Shimic of Westminster, Colo., Darla Shimic of Fort Collins, Colo., and James Shimic of Westminster, Colo.; and ex-wife, Donna Shimic of Westminster, Colo. Steve was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Wesley Shimic. Pallbearers will be Josef Shimic, James Shimic, Doug Mitchell, Mike Okada, Bob Clay and Jim Finstrom.ADVERTISEMENT BYLooking for more information?
