We played chess and had lively discussions on the Vistafjord in 1973. He had a great sense of humor and was a pretty good chess player.

I was blessed and lucky enough to have the chance to visit with Fr Oconnel shortly before he passed and couldn't be more thankful. I remember experiencing his special presence as a freshman at Good Counsel high school as a member of the class of 1991, the last all male incoming class. He is such a special and wonderful man. I feel especially awesome to have known him. May he rest in peace, Fr O. ❤ yours truly, Raphael Olegario '91

We were blessed to have been introduced to Fr. O by a dear friend. We loved his excitement and enthusiasm for life, church and God. We were working towards him presiding over our marriage this September. Sadly, we will not have Fr. O's physical presence but we will have him with us in spirit! So happy we had an opportunity to visit with him one evening shortly before his passing. May he Rest In Peace.

Father O'Connell officiated at our marriage 45 years ago. He will forever be remembered by us. We had the honor of receiving a blessing from him just a few weeks ago.

Fr was shocked to hear you passed away.
Esp since, I just talked to you couple days
Before. We were close friends for 40 yrs.
You saw me through the rough times.
We met when you were here at st johns
In Hollywood, my parish. We clicked &
Been friends, ever since. I had a cross
Stitch picture. I did for you & didn't get
It makes to you. Am going to, let Fr Ron
Have it, in your memory. You were here
When, he was in seminary & he was
At the shrine of the blessed sac with you
For awhile. I know, you would like him
To have it. You were a good priest who
Served God well. You maybe gone
But, you will always be with me.

Maury attended Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA, from 1968 to his ordination in 1972. I was the Vice-Rector then and had lots of fun with Maury and his pals. I felt he was one of the best priests SVS ever had the honor of teaching. A rare human being who lived with gusto and deep faith. From time to time I received his newsletters, usually a dozen pages long. I would respond with a phone call. A few months ago he called me and we enjoyed a long chat. Amazing how he kept going despite being on oxygen. Happy to hear the current Seminary Rector and Brother Elliott went to his funeral. I'm sure Gerry Trancone and Beep Holloway were there along with Tom Kredel and Bob Norton. How fitting that he died on July 11th, the feast day of Saint Benedict. May he rest in peace, John Haag.

Maury was in the seminary when I taught his sister, Maureen, at St. Bernard's. Off and on over the years we were in touch--he always spoke so lovingly of his family, especially his sister with whom he loved to travel--Marge? or Margaret? Thank you, Maury!

Msgr. O'Connell was a beloved uncle of my dear friend and college roommate, Mary Walburn Pearson. Meeting this man of God was a delight of my life. He was such an awesome light, leader, and friend to all. I believe he immediately became a friend to all who were in his presence. He radiated Christ's love. I offer my condolences and prayers for peace to his dear family.

Father said mass at my church, St. Michael's in Ridge. He officiated at our wedding and later went to the reception. His spirit could light up the room. What a wonderful man!
