Maxene Andrews Born January 3, 1916 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Died October 21, 1995 in Hyannis, Massachusetts, USA (heart attack) Birth Name Maxene Angelyn Andrews Ms. Andrews and her sisters, Patty and Laverne, were one of the most successful women's singing groups, with 19 gold records and sales of nearly 100 million copies. The sisters began performing in the early 1930's when the Depression wiped out their father's restaurant business. In 1937, the trio of sisters scored their first big hit with 'Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen.' In addition to 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,' their best-known songs included 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree' and 'Rum and Coca Cola.' The trio officially broke up after the death of Laverne in 1967, but temporarily interrupted their feud to star in the 1974 Broadway musical "Over Here!." (I saw it and it was great!) Ms. Andrews began a solo career in 1979. Her album and its title released in 1990, 'Maxene: An Andrews Sister.' Her last performance was on Sunday, October 8th, 1995, in the show 'Swing Time Canteen,' at New York City's Blue Angel Theater. Family (2) Spouse Lou Levy (1941 - 1951) (divorced) (2 children) Relatives Patty Andrews (sibling) and Laverne Andrews (sibling) Trade Mark (1) Middle sister, among older sister, Laverne, and younger sister, Patty Trivia (11) Middle member of The Andrews Sisters singing trio, with Laverne being the oldest and Patty being the youngest. Both parents were immigrants, a Greek father, and a Norwegian mother. While alive, she adopted two children, Aleta Ann and Peter. The Andrews Sisters were awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 6834 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California. Adopted her longtime manager and life partner, Lynda Wells, before she died. According to Wells, it was done because the two were unable to get married (same-sex marriage not being legal at the time). She was estranged from her children at the time of her death. She left the money from insurance policies before her death but did not leave anything in her will. She left everything in her will to Lynda Wells. She had a hysterectomy in the early 1940s. The Andrews Sisters trio of Laverne Andrews, Maxene Andrews & Patty Andrews are listed in order of first, second and third born. The order of their births is also the order of the length of their lifetimes. Laverne died age 55. Maxene died age 79. Patty died age 94. In 1954, Maxene, fortunately, survived a suicide attempt, and a drug overdose, and lived 41 more years. The Andrews Sisters, Laverne, Maxene, or Patty, none were biological mothers. Maxene adopted two children, a daughter, Aleta Ann, and a son, Peter. Patty also adopted one daughter, Pam DuBois.
