  • Introduction

    Melanchthon Urson Harvey was the son of William Urson Harvey and Charlotte P. Woodbury. The oldest of two, his mother died when he was only 2 ½ years old and his sister died a few years later. His father remarried and he had two half-sisters Delia and Vesta Harvey. After moving several times during his childhood, his family eventually settled in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Melancthon married Clarissa Ann Miller, one minute after midnight on January 01, 1877, in Shelby County, Indiana. The couple soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where they made their home for over 30 years and where Melanchthon was a professor of Mathematics and Science. It was also the where their two children were born, Maude Alma Harvey (b. July 7, 1887) and Mortimer Urson Harvey (b. Feb. 7, 1890). The family moved to Chicago for a few years, then removed to Elkhart, Indiana in 1921, where Melanchthon died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Preston Hogencamp.

    Elkhart Truth Name: Harvey, Mathlacthon, E. Obituary Date: February 5, 1930 Newspaper Section: Page 2 Date of Death: February 5, 1930 Date of Birth: November 11, 1853 Mathlacthon E. Harvey, 77, who had made his residence at the Lincoln Hotel here, died at 9:30 this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Preston Hogancamp in York Township where he had been taken Monday. Mr. Harvey, who gave his occupation as that of an astrologist, was born Nov. 11, 1853, In Wayne Co., Ohio. He came to Elkhart from Chicago nine years ago. Surviving him are the above mentioned daughter, a son, Mortimer Harvey of Chicago, and five grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at the H. E. Wise funeral home in Bristol, the Rev. J. H. Runkle officiating. Burial will be at Bristol.
