Melissa B. (Valentine) Mulford of Glencoe, Payne County, Oklahoma United States was born on November 21, 1823. She was married to Russell Bigelow Mulford, and had children Albert Henry Mulford, Sarah Jane Mulford, Jonathan Valentine Mulford, Joseph D. Mulford, and William Russell Mulford. Melissa Mulford died at age 82 years old on November 7, 1906.

    Melissa and Russell were cousins. She was the 5th-great-granddaughter of William Mulford I of East Hampton, New York (Russell's 4th-great-grandfather) and the 5th-great-granddaughter of William's brother, Judge John Mulford of East Hampton, as well as the 5th-great-granddaughter of Thomas Mulford of Virginia, brother of William and John. A descendant of the Crane family, on her father's mother's side. she was cousins with novelist Stephen Crane (author of famed Civil War classic, The Red Badge of Courage) and cousins with General Charles Henry Crane (attendant at President Abraham Lincoln's deathbed and later 13th U.S. Surgeon General), son of Ichabod Bennet Crane (inspiration in part behind the literary character Ichabod Crane, menaced by the headless horseman in Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow).
